LUXURY SELF-CATERING FARM STAYS ON THE MIDLANDS MEANDER

THE RIVER BEND CLUBHOUSE

The River Bend Clubhouse is the social heart of the farm – a warm and inviting communal space where guests can relax, connect, and create lasting memories together.

A spacious covered verandah features three separate seating areas that can be combined for larger gatherings, making it the perfect place to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and warm Midlands summers.

Inside, the comfortable lounge offers a large-screen TV and a beautiful built-in brick fireplace, creating a cosy retreat during the cooler winter months. Guests can also browse the small library or enjoy a selection of board games for relaxed evenings with family and friends.

The open-plan entertainment area includes a fully equipped bar (please note that it is not stocked), a pool table, and a dartboard, providing plenty of opportunities to unwind between exploring the farm and surrounding attractions.

For those who prefer to self-cater, the communal kitchen is fully equipped and flows into a spacious dining area, making it easy for groups, families, and friends to prepare and enjoy meals together in a welcoming country setting.

OUTDOOR SWIMMING POOL

Whether you’ve spent the day exploring the trails or simply want to relax, our full-sized outdoor swimming pool is the perfect place to unwind. Located alongside the Clubhouse, it offers a refreshing escape after a hike or mountain bike ride, or simply a peaceful setting to soak up the warm Midlands sunshine.

Comfortable poolside loungers and large umbrellas provide plenty of space to relax on the lush lawns while enjoying the tranquil sounds of the surrounding birdlife.

The pool area also overlooks the children’s play area, allowing parents to unwind with a good book or simply relax while keeping a watchful eye on the little ones as they play.

CHILDREN'S PLAY AREA

At River Bend Farm, children can enjoy the simple pleasures of outdoor farm life in a safe and welcoming environment. Located adjacent to the Clubhouse, the children’s play area allows little ones the freedom to explore, play, and make lasting holiday memories while remaining within easy view of parents.

The play area features a large jungle gym complete with climbing ropes, swings, tyres, and a slide that promises hours of fun. Surrounded by open space and fresh country air, it’s the perfect place for children to stay active, make new friends, and enjoy the outdoors.

BIRDING

River Bend Farm is a haven for bird lovers, with a rich diversity of birdlife that can be seen and heard throughout the property. Whether you’re an experienced birder or simply enjoy nature, keep your binoculars and camera close—you may be rewarded with sightings of some of the Midlands’ more elusive species during your stay.

For dedicated birding enthusiasts, the nearby Karkloof Conservation Centre offers two world-class waterside bird hides and the rare opportunity to spot all three South African crane species in a single outing. The KwaZulu-Natal Midlands is also renowned for exceptional birdwatching, with excellent chances of seeing sought-after species such as the White-starred Robin, Cape Parrot, and Blue Swallow.

From leisurely walks around the farm to exploring the wider Midlands Meander, every outing offers the chance to add something special to your birding list.

MOUNTAIN BIKING

Discover the beauty of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands on two wheels. Surrounded by forests, plantations, and scenic countryside, River Bend Farm provides access to an extensive network of forestry roads and trails, offering endless opportunities for mountain biking enthusiasts of all skill levels.

While our official cycling routes are still being developed, we have already identified more than 200 km of potential off-road trails using satellite mapping, allowing riders to explore the area without relying on public roads. We also welcome experienced members of the mountain biking community who would like to assist us in mapping and developing future trails. In appreciation of their contribution, discounted accommodation may be offered by prior arrangement.

Before heading out, ensure your bike is properly serviced and correctly fitted to maximise comfort, safety, and reliability on the trails.

HIKING

Experience the natural beauty of River Bend Farm at your own pace with a selection of walking and hiking trails suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Families with young children and those looking for a leisurely stroll can enjoy our gentle ±2 km grass-path river walk, which leads to a picturesque picnic spot on the river’s edge. No specialised hiking equipment is required, making it the perfect outing for everyone.

For those seeking a little more exercise, our 3 km trail offers a scenic walk around the farm, showcasing the peaceful countryside and beautiful surroundings.

More experienced hikers can venture onto our 5 km and 6 km loop trails, where you’ll enjoy tranquil forests, open grasslands, and the opportunity to encounter abundant birdlife and small wildlife along the way. If you’re looking for an even greater adventure, a variety of longer hiking routes can be found throughout the surrounding Midlands area.

FISHING

The beautiful Lions River flows through the heart of River Bend Farm, providing a peaceful setting for anglers to enjoy a relaxing day on the water. With approximately 850 metres of river frontage, guests have direct access to excellent fishing opportunities during their stay.

The river is home to a variety of freshwater fish species, making it an enjoyable destination for both experienced anglers and those simply looking to unwind beside the water. Guests are encouraged to bring their own rods, reels, and tackle to make the most of this tranquil countryside experience.

Thanks to the friendliness of our neighbouring landowners, anglers may also have the opportunity to explore additional stretches of the Lions River by prior arrangement.
